Canadian Citizenship Exam: Everything You Need to Know

A number of people have the notion that becoming a Canadian citizen just ends with obtaining a Canadian visa or that it’s all done when they get a permanent residency permit. That notion is actually not totally correct.

There’s more to obtaining Canadian citizenship than all that. All applicants will at some point have to take the Canadian citizenship test which is basically designed to evaluate responses from potential citizens of Canada on how much they know about Canada, not just history wise but even as much as the economy.

There’s really nothing you should be scared of as touching the Canadian citizenship test, it’s not designed to just cut off anyone. As long as you pass the requirements of the test, irrespective of your race, colour or ethnic inclinations, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will allow you proceed to the next level of the process.

First, let us take a look at the eligibility requirements to take part in the test:

  • To be able to partake in the test, you must not be older than 54 years and not younger than 18 years.
  • Also, you should make sure that to a professional extent, you have a good command of either the English or French Language. This is because the test is only available in those two languages.
  • You have the option of either taking the test from your remote location. However, if you’re taking this option, you must have a very good internet connection to facilitate a teleconference.

For flexibility, applicants who have difficulties with writing in the chosen language can be allowed to take an oral test, whether remotely or at the exact location of the test.

Next, it’s important to know what areas the test will cover. As earlier hinted, do not expect that you’ll only be tested on the History of  Canada.

The test covers more areas among which are the political system, the geography, the economy, the culture, as well as, the laws of Canada.
